Why Does My Guinea Pig Wheek and Popcorn?

Guinea pigs are among the most talkative pets you can keep, and almost all of it is about food, company, or being extremely pleased.

A real caption from the app. The wheeking was constant.

Wheeking is aimed squarely at you

The loud, rising whistle that starts the moment a fridge door opens is a wheek, and it is worth noting that adult guinea pigs do not really wheek at each other. It appears to be a call they developed specifically for humans, having worked out that humans operate the food.

It is learned and it is reinforced. If food reliably follows wheeking, wheeking escalates. Most owners decide this is a reasonable price to pay.

Popcorning is uncomplicated joy

A popcorn is a sudden vertical hop, often with a twist or a kick and a dash in a random direction afterwards. It's most common in young guinea pigs but adults do it too, usually around fresh bedding, fresh vegetables or a sudden burst of space.

There's no ambiguity to read into it. A popcorning guinea pig is a guinea pig having a very good moment.

The rest of the vocabulary

They are not solitary animals

Guinea pigs are herd animals and genuinely suffer when kept alone. This is taken seriously enough in Switzerland that keeping a single guinea pig is prohibited — a lone pig is legally considered neglect.

A solitary guinea pig needs far more human contact to compensate, and even then it's an imperfect substitute. If you have one and can pair it, that single change usually does more for its quality of life than anything else on this list.

Freezing is not calm

A guinea pig that goes completely still is not relaxed — it's a prey animal hoping not to be noticed. Stillness plus wide eyes is fear, not contentment.

Relaxed guinea pigs sprawl out, stretch, doze with their eyes half shut, and potter about chatting to themselves. As with rabbits, the reliable sign of a settled animal is one that takes up space.

Quick answers

Why does my guinea pig wheek when it sees me and not my partner?

Because you feed it. Wheeking is a learned call aimed at whoever has most reliably produced food, and they are quick to work out which human that is.

Is popcorning ever a sign of something wrong?

Very rarely. True popcorning is a happy behaviour. Erratic movement with distress noises, head tilting or loss of balance is a different thing and warrants a vet.

Do guinea pigs recognise their owners?

Yes. They learn individual voices and footsteps, and typically start wheeking before you are in sight.
