〰️ Not always happiness
What Does Cat Purring Actually Mean?
The most misread sound in the house. Cats also purr at the vet, and not because they are enjoying it.
Purring is a request as often as a report
The received wisdom is that purring means a happy cat. It frequently does. But cats also purr while being examined by a vet, while in pain, while giving birth, and in some cases while dying — none of which fit a simple contentment reading.
A more useful frame is that purring is a solicitation: a signal that tends to draw care and contact from others, whatever the cat's internal state. Kittens purr from a few days old while nursing, and mothers purr back. The sound's first job is to maintain contact, not to report joy.
The solicitation purr is a different noise
Research has identified a distinct purr cats use when they want something — typically food. Embedded in the low purr is a higher-frequency cry, in a range close to that of a human infant's cry, and people rate it as more urgent and less pleasant than an ordinary purr even when they cannot say why.
If your cat's morning purr sounds somehow more insistent than its evening one, you are not imagining it. You are hearing a frequency your species is poorly equipped to ignore, deployed deliberately.
How to read it in context
Purring never stands alone. Read it with the body:
- Loose body, half-closed eyes, kneading, slow tail — contentment, straightforwardly.
- Tense body, flattened ears, tucked position, wide pupils — self-soothing under stress. Common at the vet.
- Purring with hiding, not eating, or reluctance to move — possible pain. Cats are good at concealing it and purring can be part of the concealment.
The rule of thumb: the purr tells you the cat is signalling. The rest of the body tells you what about.
The healing theory, honestly
You will see claims that purring heals bones, because purr frequencies fall in a range — roughly 25 to 150 Hz — that has shown some effect on bone density in other contexts. It is a genuinely interesting hypothesis and it is not established. Treat it as an open question, not a fact about your cat.
What is well supported is the effect in the other direction: being around a purring cat lowers stress in people. That part you can verify yourself.
Quick answers
Can cats purr when they are in pain?
Yes, and they do. Purring in a cat that is hiding, off its food, tense or reluctant to move should be read as a possible pain signal rather than reassurance.
Why does my cat purr so loudly when it wants feeding?
Cats use a solicitation purr containing a higher-frequency cry in a range similar to a human infant’s. People find it harder to ignore, which is the point.
Do all cats purr?
All domestic cats can, though volume varies hugely and some are nearly silent. Among big cats, the ones that roar generally cannot purr properly, and vice versa.
