Why Does My Dog Yawn When I Am Stressed?
Dogs yawn when they are tired. They also yawn when they very much are not.
Yawning as a stress signal
In dog body language, a yawn out of context is one of the most common and most missed signals of discomfort. It belongs to a family of behaviours โ lip-licking, turning the head away, sniffing the ground abruptly, shaking off when not wet, a half-moon of white showing in the eye โ that indicate mild stress or an attempt to defuse tension.
The context is everything. A yawn on waking is a yawn. A yawn while being hugged, while a stranger leans over the dog, at the vet, or during a tense training session is almost certainly the other kind.
And as a calming signal
The concept of calming signals โ popularised by Turid Rugaas โ holds that dogs use a set of visible gestures to lower tension, both in themselves and in whoever they are dealing with. A yawn directed at an agitated person or an approaching dog functions as let us all slow down.
The framework is widely used by trainers and is better described as a well-observed practical model than a fully validated scientific one. Either way, the underlying observation โ that dogs yawn far more in tense situations than relaxed ones โ is solid.
Dogs catch yawns from us
Contagious yawning is interesting because in humans it correlates with empathy and social closeness. Dogs show it too: studies have found dogs yawn in response to human yawns, and โ the important detail โ more readily in response to their owner's yawn than a stranger's.
Some studies have found the effect and others have not, so it is not beyond dispute. But the familiarity bias is the part that keeps showing up, and it suggests a social mechanism rather than a reflex.
How to use this
Treat an out-of-context yawn as information. If your dog yawns while a child hugs it, the dog is telling you it is uncomfortable โ and that is the moment to intervene, long before a growl, which is the next step up and the one people punish.
You can also yawn back. A slow, exaggerated yawn, a soft blink and turning your body slightly side-on is a reasonable way of telling a nervous dog you are not a threat, using grammar it already has.
One medical note: a sudden increase in yawning paired with drooling, lip-licking and restlessness can indicate nausea. If it is new and persistent, it is worth a vet's opinion.
Quick answers
How do I tell a stress yawn from a tired yawn?
Context. A yawn on waking or settling is tiredness. A yawn during a hug, at the vet, when a stranger leans over, or in a tense training session is a stress signal โ usually alongside lip-licking or a turned head.
Do dogs really catch yawns from humans?
Several studies have found they do, and more readily from their own owner than a stranger. Not every study replicates it, but the familiarity effect suggests a social rather than reflexive mechanism.
Should I yawn at my dog?
It can help. A slow exaggerated yawn, soft eyes and turning side-on is a recognisable de-escalation gesture to a dog, and is a better approach to a nervous dog than direct eye contact.
